Set within a historic region of Italy once frequented by merchants traveling between the inland and the Mediterranean, *The Tale of Wine* reinterprets this rich heritage through architecture. The project begins with a pedestrian tunnel — an evocative entrance that recalls the traders’ journeys, guiding visitors through a sensory narrative connecting past and present. Emerging from the existing green pergola and inn, this sequence immerses guests in the site’s layered history before introducing them to a new architectural experience.
The design concept merges vernacular tradition with contemporary intervention. A simple, traditional house form embraces a modern rectangular volume, symbolizing the dialogue between memory and innovation. This interplay creates a cohesive spatial language where old and new coexist, reinforcing continuity while embracing change. The new building’s placement and orientation harmonize with the existing structures and natural landscape, enhancing the site’s integrity through sustainable and context-sensitive design.
Internally, the architecture reveals a contemporary character — generous open spaces for exhibitions and cultural events contrast with intimate areas designed for reflection and wine tasting. Perforated corten steel panels filter light, producing a dynamic interplay of shadow and texture that evolves throughout the day. Locally sourced limestone, reclaimed wood, cork, and corten steel celebrate regional craftsmanship while ensuring environmental responsibility through passive cooling and energy-efficient strategies.
Ultimately, *The Tale of Wine* embodies a dialogue between heritage and modernity — a respectful yet forward-looking addition that strengthens the relationship between architecture, landscape, and culture. It stands as both a tribute to the past and a living space for contemporary expression.
